BALE SAKEPAT: FUSION OF MODERN MIXOLOGY AND BALINESE HERITAGE AT HOSHINOYA BALI
Immersion in the Art of Crafted Cocktails Inspired by Nyepi Philosophy
Ubud, February 2024… Bale Sakepat, launched in February 2024 at HOSHINOYA Bali, embodies the resort’s commitment to Balinese artisanship and culture. Through a marriage of traditional products and techniques with innovative artistry, Bale Sakepat presents a refined and stimulating experience through curated and carefully crafted cocktails and snacks. The name ‘Bale Sakepat’ itself signifies the four-pillar gazebo, traditionally used for hosting guests with beverages and light snacks during warm and inviting conversations, exemplifying Balinese hospitality.
Designed as HOSHINOYA Bali’s interpretation of the Unknown Ubud, this day-to-night outlet seamlessly blends craft cocktails, bespoke spirits, and warm Balinese hospitality, paying homage to the region’s vibrant cultural heritage. Guests can expect a new series of curated cocktails every four months following the seasons, with each series promising a delightful sip and a remarkable tale. Each drink artfully depicts Balinese life values and colorful folklore rooted in local tradition and history, with the latest series dedicated to Nyepi day, the Balinese Day of Silence, celebrated on March 11th.
Nyepi marks the Hindu New Year, symbolizing purification and the ushering in of a positive year. During this meditative 24-hour period, Bali embraces silence and serenity as lights go out, roads remain deserted, and all activity ceases. Starting in March, guests can immerse themselves in a narrative woven through five meticulously crafted cocktails inspired by Nyepi philosophy. Each elixir unfolds a tale of humans’ everlasting struggle against evil spirits and the eventual triumph of light over shadows.
- “Endian”, an elixir representing evil spirits and the triumph of light over shadows
- “Pengerupukan”, a cocktail crafted to symbolize the battle to purge the island of evil spirits.
- “CaturBrata”, a drink that pays tribute to human struggle to conquer their inner demons
- “Mata Ai” or Sunrise, honors the legacy of each new beginning and hope, marking a victory over darkness
- “Ngembak Geni”, paying homage to transformation of rage into pure hearted mercy upon the first rays of sunrise
“Bale Sakepat is a testament to our passion, creativity, and our shared love for Balinese heritage and culture through spirits and cocktails,” says Ryuichi Karakawa, General Manager of HOSHINOYA Bali. “As the afternoon unfolds with cool jungle breezes, Bale Sakepat becomes the warm gathering place where guests can unwind while sampling cocktails, hearing tales of Balinese folklore, and play traditional Balinese board games.”
On the outskirts of Ubud, surrounded by the picturesque Ubud jungle and valley of Tukad Pakerisan sacred river, sits the opulent HOSHINOYA Bali resort. The resort is built to provide visitors a wholly immersive understanding of Ubud’s rich, yet less known, cultural heritage. Everything about the resort, from its architecture to the experiences and activities it offers, with the latest feature, Bale Sakepat, is intended to highlight the splendor and beauty of Balinese culture.
